Unfortunately, pressure of space made it impossible to include a chapter on social conditions in the book. We know however that a supportive social framework protects against ill-health, and that the lack of such support tends to produce ill-health. The impact of the disintegration of social and community bonds cannot be quantified, but that implies that the main conclusion of BILLS OF HEALTH (1/5 of health service effort goes on mending problems created by bad policies) must be an underestimate. The excised social chapter is published on this web: The Impact of Social Conditions on Health The Impact of the Media on Health
